Understanding Meniscus Root Tears: Surgical Video
The meniscus is a vital component of knee anatomy, acting as a shock absorber between the femur and tibia. Meniscus root tears, where the meniscus detaches from its attachment at the root, can severely compromise the knee’s function. Unlike peripheral meniscus tears, root tears completely destabilize the cartilage, leading to greater stress on the articular cartilage. These injuries often result in a rapid progression of joint degeneration because the meniscus can no longer distribute load properly. Without treatment, a meniscus root tear can lead to early-onset arthritis and chronic pain, making prompt and effective intervention critical.
Treatment Options
The most effective treatment for meniscus root tears is surgical repair, aiming to restore the meniscus’s function and preserve knee health. This typically involves reattaching the torn root to its original location, often through an arthroscopic procedure.
Surgical Demonstration: Arthroscopic Repair of a Meniscus Root Tear
In the video featured, I demonstrate an arthroscopic repair of a meniscus root tear, a minimally invasive technique that uses small incisions to access and fix the tear. During the surgery, I anchor the meniscus root back to the tibia using a tunnel that I create in the tibial bone. The procedure ensures that the meniscus is properly reattached, restoring its function as a shock absorber.
Feel free to watch the video for a step-by-step look at the repair process and see how this technique can provide long-lasting results for patients with meniscus root tears.
